Birthdays, Baptisms and Bangs…oh my!

This was a BUSY weekend!  There was a first birthday cake (with a dozen cupcakes too), a big baptism cake and 2 dozen cupcakes for a 4th of July celebration!  This coming week will be busy too…a birthday cake for my son and my first wedding cake!

This cake was awesome!! Everyone at the party commented on how wonderful it looked and then when we ate it, everyone was yet again impressed at how tasty and moist it was!!! Thank you, Emily for making my son’s cake and first birthday so special and memorable!!! ~Jennifer Flanagan

We wanted to thank you for the beautiful cake for Zachary’s baptism.  It looked great and tasted even better!  I love decorating cakes myself but now with three kids I can’t ever imagine having the time it takes to complete ones like I did when my girls were little.  I’m sure we’ll be in touch with you again for future celebrations. ~Nicole Lowe

Another New Flavor

I successfully tested another cake recipe yesterday and I’m (very) pleased to announce that Vanilla Chai will be making it to the permanent list!  It is a moist and fluffy sweet vanilla cake with warm chai spices throughout.  It was very yummy with vanilla buttercream, but I think it would be equally scrumptious with a milk chocolate buttercream.

Use-It-Ups

So, my newly-found chocolate cake recipe is not easily divided in half.  I only needed 1/2 of a recipe of it today, so I made the rest of the batter into cupcakes.  I also had a little bit of fondant left from a few of my recent cakes, so I decorated the cupcakes with the leftovers.  I think they turned out pretty cute!  We’ll be taking them to my husband’s parents’ house tomorrow for dinner (well, for after dinner).

Current Trends

Of course, the “customer gets what the customer wants”, but there are a few trends out there when it comes to wedding cakes.  One of the more common trends is personal cakes, where the couple has a tower of mini-cakes or cupcakes with the topper being a small cutting cake or the traditional saved first anniversary cake.  The are SUPER time-consuming for the cake decorator and therefore, typically much higher-priced than the traditional wedding cake, but they are highly dramatic and mighty impressive!  I have also seen this done with cookies, decorated with the bride and groom’s initials or monogram, or stacked to look like mini wedding cakes. This trend is also popular for birthday, anniversary, retirement and graduation parties and wedding and baby showers too.  Frequently, this trend is used for a first birthday with the top cake being the smash cake for the child.
