PSA: I’m MELTING!

Often, you will hear me suggest that you just shouldn’t use buttercream in hot weather…this is why!   The lovely Bronwen Weber of Frosted Art Bakery in Dallas, TX has created a cute video explaining this very problem…

So, if you don’t want your cake to melt, please, PLEASE, pretty please…use fondant and DON’T have your cake outside in these conditions (your guests will probably thank you too!). :)  After all, you’ve paid all that money for me to spend all that time making and decorating your pretty cake…your guests should be able to enjoy it too!

Thank you, Mrs. Weber, for creating a video demonstrating this exact problem!  Sometimes people just need to see it for themselves!

Announcement: New Cake Shapes

I was generously rewarded by Santa this year, so I thought I would announce the newest additions that will be joining the round and square cake pans!  Please give a warm welcome to the Hexagon and the Petal pan sets! ;)  They have been unpacked, washed and are patiently waiting to be filled with yummy cake batter!

Snow Day!

This post won’t be about cake (sorry!).  We got 12 1/2 inches of snow dumped on us last night and school was cancelled.  I’ve decided to share with you a little of what we do on our days off!  We started the day with French Toast.  Why?  Because we have eggs coming out our ears and 3 loaves of bread, so why not!  Then we made homemade soft pretzels.  This is a tradition that goes back to my childhood…well, my Mom’s childhood, truth be told.  The recipe at the end of the post.

2010 in Review

The following email was in my inbox this morning from WordPress, who, for at least the next few months, has hosted my blog since its inception.  I think it’s funny and I think that someone has too much time on their hands!  Just thought I’d pass it along!  Happy New Year and thank you for making 2010 a successful year!  Enjoy!

The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health:

In the meantime…

In case you are anxiously awaiting the arrival of blog posts with actual content and pictures, you can ease your anxiousness by visiting my Facebook page…just use the little linky linky to the right, or you can click on the Flickr box on the right and view them that way too. I had a few moments to upload the last month’s pictures on both of those sites! Enjoy in the meantime and I promise to return shortly with some REAL content!

Busy, Busy, Busy!

Sorry for the delay, folks! I’m about 10 cakes behind in posting pictures because I’ve been so busy making others! I promise when things slow down (even a little) I’ll try to get them off the camera! :)

Availability Announcement

September is filling up FAST! I have room for a smallish cake or two on the 25th, but otherwise, it’s booked! Sorry, folks…and THANK YOU for keeping me busy!

Announcement

If you sent me an email about a dinosaur cake today, PLEASE, PLEASE send me the email again…I accidentally deleted it from my phone and can’t get it back!  Thank you!

WANTED!

Someone to write my business plan…oh yeah, and to invest lots and lots of money into a business that is SURE to take off…once it ever gets off the ground! {PLEASE!} :)

And on a lighter note, Mom and Dad got me an airbrushing class at the end of January!  They are going to get me an airbrush too!  Super excited!  Thanks Mom and Dad!

Completely not cake related, but

This is one of my very favorite appetizers OF.ALL.TIME!  So much, in fact, that I craved them while I was preggers with my youngest and could have probably eaten a whole batch of them in one sitting!  They are flakey and cheesey and salty…yummy!  These are very nice hot and fresh from the oven!  The smell of these baking brings back many memories of spending Christmas with my Dad’s family.  And as a Holiday treat, I’m sharing the recipe with you!  It comes from my Grandmother on my Dad’s side.  I’m not sure where she got the recipe from, but they sure are yummy!

Cheese Olives
1/2 lb sharp cheddar cheese, grated (about 2 cups)
1/2 cup butter
dash of Worcestershire sauce
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 (5 oz) jar of pimento-stuffed olives (normal-sized, not jumbo)

Cut together the cheese, butter and Worcestershire sauce with a pastry blender.  Add the flour and salt.  Wrap the olives in bits of paste (about 1 tsp), roll them into a ball and place on cookie sheets.  Freeze them until hard, about 1 hour.  Bake (straight from the freezer) at 425 degrees for 12 minutes and serve hot.

Notes:
1. DO NOT line your baking sheets with foil…they will stick!
2. If the ingredients are all room temperature, it works much better.
3. These freeze well, so after they are frozen on a cookie sheet, put them into zip-top bags to remove on an as-needed basis!
4. Be careful, they are addicting!

Hope everyone has a safe and happy Holidays!  See you all after the new year!
